Barcelona Best Bits

It´s been two months since 'back to school' mode and I´m still grieving the end of summer.  So I decided to sort through my summer pics, aka indulging in some serious reminiscing.  I had the pleasure of spending a couple of weeks in Barcelona courtesy of the lovely Esti and Bitxo in their beautiful home slap bang in the city centre.  The list of stuff to do in this city is endless, from checking out the Sagrada Familia to climbing up Montjuïc.  But here are my best bits...

Ya han pasado dos meses desde el modo "vuelta al cole" y todavía sigo llorando el fin del verano. Por eso he decidido ordenar mis recuerdos a través de mis fotos,una especie de indulto por complaciencia. He tenido el placer de pasar un par de semanas en barcelona, cortesía de la bella Esti y Bitxo en su hermosa casa del centro de la ciudad. La lista de cosas que hacer en esta ciudad es interminable, empezando desde La Sagrada Familia hasta terminar subiendo el Montjuïc. Pero aquí están mis mejores momentos...

When it comes to museums there´s no shortage in Barcelona, many of them are pricey though, for some freebie action the CaixaForum is always legendary.  Another personal favourite of mine is MACBA, the contemporary art museum.

Cuando se trata de museos, Barcelona tiene de todos los tipos. Muchos de ellos son caros, sin embargo los pases gratuitos del CaixaForum son legendarios y una pasada. Otro de mis favoritos es el MACBA, museo de arte contemporaneo.

I was totally wowed by the Magic fountain, slightly Disneyesque but still a spectacular show.  It was a great way to end my shopathon at Las Arenas which is a converted bullring with a 360 degree view of the city. 

La Fuente Mágica me cautivó totalmente, un poco Disney, pero aun así un show espectacular. Fue una estupenda manera de terminar mi matarathon de compras en Las Arenas, una antigua plaza de toros convertida en centro comercial, con unas vistas en la parte superior de alucine.

Life´s a beach oh yes.   Partnered with my beach essentials I got some quality R and R time by jumping on a train and getting myself out of the city to Ocata. It´s about 25 mins away, and is quiet as, the waters pretty clear too, so a real win.

La vida en la playa, es vida. Con mis articulos esenciales  busco relajarme cogiendo el primer tren con dirección a Ocata un barrio litoral que esta a unos 25 minutos de distancia. Es una playa silenciosa y con aguas cristalinas. Es perfecta para huir del ruidoso centro.

    

A day trip to San Pol del Mar made for a fantastic escape too.  It is an hour on the train but the village offers an amazing beach with a back drop of beautiful hills, making it well worth the journey.

También pasar el día en San Pol del Mar se puede convertir en una fantástica escapada. El inconveniente es que esta a una hora en tren pero os puedo asegurar que el viaje merece mucho la pena.

For some park life, Güell is awesome, Gaudí did good, but there´s also the labyrinth de Horta the oldest park in Barcelona, a bit of a hidden jewel.  I fell head over heel for the romantic canal and garden.

Para los que les gustan los parques, Güel es impresionante, el señor Gaudí lo hizo muy bien. Pero también tenemos El Laberinto de Horta, el parque más antiguo de Barcelona, otra de esas joyas escondidas.

La Boqueria is an enchanting market, it totally had me at the first fruit juice stall hehe.  Yes it is a bit of a tourist spot, but the further in you go the more you realise it´s actually a choice for the locals too.

La Boqueria es un mercado encantador, a mi me conquisto con sus  puestos de zumo a la primera hehe. Tal vez sea un lugar turístico pero cuanto más te adentras en él más percibes que es un sitio también para la gente de la zona.

The most memorable part of my stay in Barcelona was without a doubt the rooftop Jazz concert at La Pedrera.  Eva Cortés was amazing, and the venue magical.

La parte más memorable de mi estancia en Barcelona fue sin duda el concierto de Jazz en la azotea de La Pedrera. Eva Cortés estuvo increíble.  

Unfortunately the live Jazz session only happens during summer nights.  However the Pedrera is open for guided tours at night at the moment, a great chance to experience how the place comes to life after dark.

Por desgracia, estas sesiones de Jazz solo ocurren durante las noches de verano. Sin embargo, La Pedrera esta abierto para visitas guiadas por la noche, una gran oportunidad para experimentar como el lugar cobra vida por la noche.

I have a major sweet tooth and Escribá was it for me.  I definitely know who I´d want to make my wedding cake.  You should seriously put this place in your little black book, Antoni Escribá wasn´t known as the Mozart of chocolate for nothing.

Tengo que decir que me gustan mucho los dulces y por eso creo que que la pastelería Escribá estaba hecha para mi desde el principio. Es definitivamente el lugar donde voy a encargar la tarta de mi boda. En serio, tenéis que marcar este tienda en vuestra agenda de sitios donde ir antes de morir, Antoni Escribá no es por casualidad reconocido como el Mozart del chocolate.

I also need to mention La Xina, this place took my taste buds to the pleasure zone.  By far one of the best places I´ve been to in Spain for dim sum.

También es necesario que mencione La Xina, un restaurante que llevo a mis papilas gustativas al cielo de los placeres. De lejos, uno de los mejores lugares de España para dim sum.

If you´re a big fan of Patatas Bravas, Bar Tomás is a must.  It´s an old school bar which won´t charge you an arm and a leg to deliver the goods.  Even Ben and Jerry agree that they serve quality bravas.

Por otro lado si eres un big fan de las Patatas Bravas, no puedes dejar de ir al Bar Tomás. Es un bar de la vieja escuela que no te  cobrará uno ojo de la cara. Incluso Ben and Jerry están de acuerdo en que ahí se sirve algo bueno.

Thinking about all this food is making my mouth water, but there's more...  You can´t go to Barcelona and not try a burger at Kiosko.  The place is always chocka, but don´t let that put you off, cos it will totally live up to it´s golden reputation.

Pensando en toda esta comida se me esta haciendo la boca agua, pero hay más... No puedes ir a Barcelona y no probar las hamburguesas del restaurante Kiosko. El lugar siempre esta a rebosar, pero no dejes que eso te desanime porque no te decepcionará.

If you want to get your dance on, no place beats Razzmatazz.  There something for everyone from Indie rock to techno pop.  There´s tons to do in Barcelona and even though I´ve been there before it was great to have more time to really appreciate it, to the point where I would proudly wear an 'I heart BCN' t-shirt out of bed even in Madrid. ;)

Y si quieres salir a bailar, no hay mejor lugar que el Razzmatazz. Hay de todo y para todos, desde el indie rock hasta techno pop. Tienes millones de cosas que hacer en Barcelona, incluso habiendo estado anteriormente siempre encuentro algo nuevo. Me gusta tanto que llevo con orgullo la camiseta que dice 'I Heart BCN' no solo para dormir sino también para andar por las calles de Madrid. ;)

Trick or Treat

It´s been Halloween fever at work all week!  So I´m gonna be content with overdosing on popcorn and having a scary film fest at a friends place. Whether you are going to party or having a night in, enjoy!

Ha sido la fiebre de Halloween en el trabajo toda la semana! Así que hoy me voy a dar una sobredosis de palomitas de maíz y me voy a preparar para un festival de películas de miedo en la casa de unos amigos. De cualquier manera, si te vas de fiesta o te quedas en casa, disfruta!

 

A day in Las Rozas Village

Autumn's about to kick in so I'm trying to give my wardrobe a bit of a revamp. Instead of going mad traipsing around Madrid, for which I definitely need to pencil in a whole Saturday AND some sort of massage action for the aftermath, I much prefer a relaxed Sunday shopping session at Las Rozas Village.

El otoño esta a punto de caer y yo estoy intentando
renovar mi armario. Pero en vez de volverme loca en Madrid durante todo un sábado, prefiero relajarme el domingo haciendo unas compras en Las Rozas Village.

If you haven't been before, go! It's the most chic designer outlet, and an outlet means bargains without the madness of sale shopping, so smiles all around!

Si no has estado antes, ya estas tardando en ir. Es uno de los outlet más chic de España, y por outlet hablo de descuentos y no de las locuras de las rebajas.



There's an eclectic combo of shops from Loewe to Diesel. It's a bit of an Aladdin's cave for me, I always come back with bags as well as a huge wish list!

Hay una gran variedad de tiendas desde Loewe a Diesel. Es como la cueva de Aladin, siempre vuelves a casa con muchas bolsas y con una lista de deseos gigante.

The Village looks great and there's an amazing terrace with fantastic views.  The Lobby Cafe is my favourite for a bit of brunch action.

Las Rozas Village tiene estilo... tiene mucho estilo, incluida su terraza con unas vistas increibles a las sierra. The Lobby Cafe es otro lugar perfecto para cuando llega la hora del brunch, es mi preferido.
  

Special events go on all year round. Last week I was invited to Hoss Intropia for drinks and nibbles as well as a dance, with DJs Brianda and Miranda making it a night to remember.

Los eventos especiales estan durante todo el año. La pasada semana fui invitada al Hoss Intropia para tomar algo y luego bailar un rato con las Dj's Brianda y Miranda haciendo de esta noche un buen recuerdo.

It's shopping and more, minus the guilt, and if you dare to go with your other half I promise there will be no sulky face involved.  Oh, and for those of you nowhere near Madrid, fear not. Vogue Fashion's Night Out

It was real madness around Salamanca in Madrid, the streets were packed with fashionistas going from one store to the next in the shopping event of the year.

Era una auténtica locura andar por el barrio Salamanca y su famosa Milla de Oro, las calles estaban abarrotadas de "fashionistas" yendo y viniendo de unas tiendas a otras en el evento de moda del año.

The usual freebies of manicures and touch ups were a hit, with women queuing for miles.  Copious amounts of booze kept on flowing all night long with some serious scratch action from DJs plus street style to die for making it the place to be.

Los típicos regalos de manicura y maquillaje fueron un éxito entre las mujeres que se amontonaban en kilométricas colas. El alcohol fluyó junto a la música de unos inspirados Djs durante toda la noche, sin contar con el estilo que desprendían las calles, haciendo de ellas el lugar donde había que estar.

I'm not sure how much shopping was actually done, not that it was the point of course but the event successfully managed to transform the area into one big party.

No estoy segura de cuantas compras se hicieron en realidad, quizas ese no fuese el punto del evento, tal vez lo importante era la transformación de la zona en una gran fiesta glamurosa.

Quick stop Manchester

I´m a real shopping fiend and Manchester is one of my favourite cities to hit up for retail therapy.  My usual shopping route involves Market street, King street, the Arndale and the Trafford Centre and of course the Avenue Spinningfields.

Soy una adicta a las compras y Manchester es una de mis ciudades favoritas para visitar cuando tengo que hacer terapia de compras. Mi ruta comercial habitual consiste en Market Street, King Street, the Arndale and the Trafford Centre y por supuesto el Spinningfields Avenue.

I stayed at the charming Velvet hotel on the infamous canal street, just footsteps away from the high street and Piccadilly station. Full of character, this boutique hotel was formally a textile mill, it retains some distinct features giving it uniquely glamorous feel.

Me alojé en el encantador Velvet hotel en el conocido canal street, a unos pocos pasos de la calle principal y de la estación de Piccadilly. Este hotel lleno de caracter, fue antiguamente una fabrica textil, que conserva algunas caracteristicas distintivas que le dan un toque único y glamuroso.

If you are a big tea fan as most folk up north are, you have to have a brew at North Tea Power.  They offer a huge variety of exotic teas in a lovely atmosphere, ranging from the usual herbal teas to the more obscure popcorn flavour. 

Si eres un gran fan del té como casi todos los norteños, necesitas ir al North Tea Power. Ofrecen una gran variedad de tés exóticos en un ambiente encantador, que van desde las infusiones habituales al sabor de palomitas de maiz más raro.

When it comes to food there are number of Michelin starred restaurants in Manchester but I have a real soft spot for Albert's shed.  A hearty menu with a great canal view from the terrace AND the sticky toffee pudding really is to die for!

Cuando se trata de comidas hay un gran numero de restaurantes con estrellas Michelin en Manchester, pero yo tengo un sitio especial en mi corazón para el Alberts's shed. Con un menú delicioso y una gran vista del canal desde la terraza hacen de este restaurante una autentica pasada. Ah! el pudín de caramelo que tienen es un postre... para morirse!!

After refueling and a heck of a lot of shopping I headed to Noho, to give my feet a well deserved rest.  I Chilled for a while to awesome music and even had a classic game of Jenga.

Después de recobrar energias y recorrer un millar de tiendas, me fui al bar Noho para dar a mis pies un merecido descanso. Relajandome por un rato escuchando buena música y jugando al clásico juego de la Jenga.

The Ultimate Tortilla Española

This should serve four seriously hungry folks and takes about 30 mins to dish up.  Here's the stuff you need to get going:

3 Potatoes peeled and sliced into thin rounds

2 Small onions chopped into half moons

4 eggs

1 1/2 cups of Vegetable oil, 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil and salt.

Esto puede valer para 4 personas que se esten muriendo de hambre, solo se tarda 30 minutos (si tardas mas te aconsejamos que salgas corriendo de la casa). Material que necesitas:

3 patatas peladas cortadas en finas rodajas
2 cebollas pequeñas cortadas en medias lunas
4 huevos
1 1/2 tazas de aceite vegetal, 2 cucharadas de aceite de oliva virgen extra sal.

Heat up the vegetable oil over medium- high heat.  When the oil is hot add the potatoes.  Turn the heat down and cook the potatoes through.  Add a teaspoon of salt.  Before the potatoes start to brown bung in the onions and cook for 10 more mins or until they are golden brown.  Remove the potatoes and onions from the pan onto a paper towel lined plate.

Whisk the eggs in a bowl and add half a teaspoon of salt.  Add the potatoes and onions and gently fold everything together.  Heat the olive oil in a non stick pan.  Then add the egg mixture and cook on a medium heat until the bottom is set.  Flip the tortilla and cook until it is golden brown.

Let it cool and serve with crusty bread and some home made Alioli.

Calienta el aceite vegetal a fuego lento medio-alto. Cuando este caliente se añaden las patatas peladas. Baja el fuego y cocina las papas. Añade una cucharadita de sal. Antes de que las papas empiecen a tostarse echamos las cebollas y lo cocinamos todo durante 10 minutos o hasta que las cebollas esten doradas. Después retira las patatas y las cebollas de la sarten y ponlo sobre un plato con un papel de cocina para que absorva el aceite extra.

Bate los huevos en un bol y añade media cucharita de sal. Añade las patatas junto las cebollas y con mucho cariño y delicadeza mezclalo con los huevos batidos. Calienta el aceite de oliva en una sarten antiadherente. A continuación, agrega toda la mezcla y ponlo a fuego medio hasta que la parte inferior este cuajada. Voltea la tortilla y cocinalo hasta que este dorado.

Dejalo enfriar un poco y sirvelo después con pan crujiente y un rico alioli hecho en casa.

  

For the Alioli which literally takes about 2 mins you need:

2 garlic cloves

1 and a half cup of olive oil

1 egg

1 teaspoon of white vinegar

Bit of Parsley

Pinch of salt

Using a hand blender blend together all the ingredients but without moving it around until the mixture is thick, after which you may go mad with the blender to desired consistency. Stick it in the fridge to chill before serving and boom.

This is the ultimate tortilla recipe courtesy of the lovely Mary Ann Guazo.  There are many variations so feel free  be creative and add whatever else you fancy to the recipe.  I love adding green peppers in with the potatoes and onions.  Que aproveche!

Para el alioli solo necesitarás 2 minutos. Que necesitas:

2 dientes de ajo

1 + 1/2 taza de aceite de oliva

1 huevo

1 cucharadita de vinagre blanco

Un poco de Perejil

Una pizca de sal

Poner todos los ingredientes en un vaso de batidora de mano, poner el brazo hasta el fondo sin moverlo y empezar a batir, una vez empieza a espesarse se puede mover la batidora hasta conseguir la consistencia deseada. Se deja en la nevera durante un rato para que enfrie y listo para comer.

Esta es la receta de tortilla de patatas de mi querida Mary Ann Guazo. Existen muchas variaciones y tipos, se creativo y añade cualquier cosa que te apetezca. A mi personalmente me encanta añadir pimientos verdes. Que aproveche!

Film Night

Last night I headed to the cinema to watch the much hyped Amazing Spiderman film.  As expected it was real summer blockbuster material with special effects, explosions, action sequences and a bit of good old romance.

Anoche fui al cine a ver la muy promocionada pelicula The Amazing Spiderman. Como era de esperar fue un verdadero blockbuster de verano; con muchos efectos especiales, explosiones, secuencias de acción y un poco romance clasico.

For me personally it offered more than Sam Raimi's first Spiderman film, starting with the more fitting Andrew Garfield cast as the lovable nerdy hero.  The story is retold with more of a focus on Peter Parker´s relationships and his quest to find his parents.

Personalmente creo que ofrece mucho más que la primera película de Spiderman con Sam Raimi en la dirección. Empezando con un reparto más adecuado, Andrew Garfield es ahora el adorable héroe nerd. La historia se vuelve a contar pero con un mayor enfoque en las relaciones de Peter Parker y en la busqueda de sus padres.

 

If you are expecting any real answers to the mysteries you may be slightly disappointed, and will have to wait for the inevitable sequels.  Despite this the character development and chemistry between Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield makes it a good watch. I give it a well deserved 6 out of 10 for entertainment value.  

Si estas esperando encontrar respuestas a los misterios de su historia te puedes sentir un poco decepcionado,lo único que podrás hacer es esperar a las próximas secuelas. A pesar de todo el desarrollo de los protagonistas y la química entre Emma Stone y Andrew Garfield hacen que sea una pelicula agradable de ver. Le doy un buen merecido 6/10 por el entretenimiento que aporta.
